A Good Place for Hiking

Ironic. On Thursday, I starting writing this post about how much I love the South Central Pennsylvania area because there are so many nice hiking trails around, then, that very night, a trail took revenge. I started on a hike, it began to rain, the finale of So You Think You Can Dance was about to be on in a half an hour, so I brilliantly decided to run down the the mountain. Well, I was wearing old sneakers, and the rocks were really slippery wet, so I took a tumble and sliced open my knee. Smart, I know. At least I didn't break anything. I told my mom that I was close enough to the road that I could have at least crawled down the side of the mountain and laid on the road until somebody stopped. A great relief, it didn't come to that. It probably would've been a sketchy white unlabeled van that would be the first to drive by too...

However, as I started writing earlier, I do love living in a place where there is easy access to nature. I love the beauty and freedom of a solitary trail. I love the climb up into the middle-of-nowhere, where birds sing, turtles scuttle, mountain laurels flower, and vistas overlook the valley.

When my brother-in-law who lives in Texas was here, we hit up almost all the trails within driving distance to Shippensburg. When I make my move to the city at the end of this week, I am going to miss the nature I have grown to love this summer.

Maybe the DC area has lots of nature too? I know downtown DC is at least landscaped well. How about the suburbs? I guess I'll find out.

Branches and Berries

I'm lovin' summer.

Everything about it. The sun, plants, colors, tastes, smells, views, sounds, water, weather, freedom, sky, and people.

It's probably good summer is only once a year; otherwise it might be sensory overload. I am thankful for the seasons (although I wish they could all be more like summer).

Summer Eatin'

Warning: the food discussed hereafter will make you salivate. Read post at your own risk.

At a picnic this week with my family, we had shish kabobs marinated in Hawaiian sauce. I chopped up everything from zucchini to broccoli and speared them onto wooden skewers.

Then for dessert we had grilled pineapple, because I thought it would be a good idea to take something I already love and throw it on the grill. I was right. Mmmmmmmm. The only thing as tasty as fresh pineapple is grilled pineapple.

Here's my recipe:

Honey Citrus Grilled Pineapple:
--Cut a fresh pineapple into flat slices
--Brush with mixture of 3 tablespoons of honey, 1 tablespoon of lemon juice, 2 tablespoons of orange juice, and a pinch of pepper
--Grill until golden brown

Oh, man. This is delicious; I guarantee it.

Could It Be Global Warming?

Sweltering. Yes, that is the word to describe the heat today.

Today being the first real "hot" day of "summer," it didn't take long until we realized that our air conditioning is broken. The air inside our house sticky as molasses. It feels like we are sitting inside a greenhouse with winter coats on. I am generally a cold person, but today is the exception.

The air conditioning repairmen originally said they couldn't come for two weeks since everybody is probably cranking up the air for the first time this season, but then they showed up at our door an hour later. They have been tinkering with the central air all day long, but nothing. They hacked up the bush surrounding the unit, been hammering, taking apart, putting back to together, making strange noises, and it won't work. Oh, now we'll have to back to the days before air-conditioning. I don't think I enjoy that prospect.

Summer Past

Shakespeare's Globe in LondonI loved this summer. It was definitely the best one of my life. Went to Europe. Yeah. Met some awesome friends. Worked as a tutor at the learning center. Relaxed. Swam. Read a little. Had a few picnics. Went Shopping. Painted. Found my independence. Thought about life. I am a better person. I still don't know entirely who I am, but I do know more; I am probably as close to knowing thyself as is possible, for I don't really believe you can know yourself truly (as part of being alive consists of us being continually in a state of change and developing a new self-awareness consistent with our stage in life).

Giant Spider in BilbaoI guess I'm just sad summer is over. While, I wouldn't say it went fast per se, it went all together too quickly. Classes start tomorrow, so I am going to have to come to grips with the idea that my summer is officially gone.
